SANTA CLARA, Calif. The San Francisco 49ers lost quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a season-ending left foot injury Sunday, dealing a big blow to one of the NFL’s top teams.

Garoppolo got hurt on the opening drive of a 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins and will need to undergo surgery that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.

Its pretty crushing. We know what Jimmys been through, how hard hes worked at this, coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game. That was a really cool game, just as a team and all the stuff that went on throughout the game and just be able to overcome some things. So its such a special win. But definitely mixed emotions hearing about Jimmy.

The first-place 49ers have won five straight games to establish themselves as one of the top contenders in the NFC but now must go the rest of the way with untested rookie Brock Purdy after losing starter Trey Lance to a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2.

This is the third time Garoppolo has had a season derailed by injury since joining the 49ers midway through the 2017 season. He went down with a season-ending knee injury in the third game of the 2018 season and missed eight games with ankle injuries in 2020.

In Garoppolo’s two healthy seasons, the Niners went to the Super Bowl in 2019 and the NFC title game in 2021.

Purdy threw a touchdown pass to Kyle Juszczyk on his first drive and another to McCaffrey to cap a well-executed two-minute drill at the end of the half.

Jimmy Garoppolo Out For Year With Broken Foot

49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is done for the 2022 season.

Garoppolo left Sundays win over the Dolphins with a foot injury early in the first half and head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that Garoppolo broke his left foot. Shanahan said that the injury will end Garoppolos season.

Garoppolo took over as the 49ers starter after Trey Lance broke his ankle, so the team is now down to third-stringer Brock Purdy. Purdy went 25-of-37 for 210 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the 33-17 win. Theyll work to get Purdy up to speed for his first start against the Buccaneers next Sunday.

Shanahan was asked about the prospect of Lance returning last month and said he hasnt been told theres a chance, so I think things would have to be pretty drastic. Sundays development was certainly a drastic one and there are sure to be more questions about the possibility of Lance getting back on the field this year.

Jacob Eason is on the practice squad and will likely move up to the No. 2 role unless the 49ers have eyes on a street free agent or someone on another teams practice squad.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. Rookie Brock Purdy threw two touchdown passes after replacing an injured Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers used another dominant defensive performance to beat the Miami Dolphins 33-17 Sunday for their fifth straight win.

Garoppolo has a broken foot and will miss the rest of the season, coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game.

The 49ers , who are just a game ahead of the Seahawks for the NFC West lead, allowed a 75-yard touchdown pass to Trent Sherfield on the opening play from scrimmage but little else until the fourth quarter against a high-powered attack for Miami which had scored at least 30 points in four straight games.

Jimmie Ward and Deommodore Lenoir intercepted Tua Tagovailoa in the third quarter, leading to two field goals.

The 49ers had their four-game, second-half shutout streak snapped when Tagovailoa threw a 45-yard TD pass to Tyreek Hill in the opening minute of the fourth quarter but held on from there. They capped the performance with a strip-sack from Nick Bosa that Dre Greenlaw returned for a 23-yard score.

Purdy finished 25 for 37 for 210 yards, two TDs and one interception.
