Dr Paley Celebrates 10 Years At The Paley Orthopedic And Spine Institute

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. For 10 years, West Palm Beach has been home to a team of world-renowned surgeons, including Dr. Dror Paley at the Paley Orthopedic and Spine Institute in West Palm Beach.

It’s an anniversary worth celebrating. And what does it mean for medical tourism here in South Florida?

Mia Johnson and her husband have four kids.

“We have eight kids. Four biological, four have come home from China over the last 6.5 years,” she said.

Her journey has taken her from Chicago to China to West Palm Beach of all places.

“We brought home Noah first,” she said. “He was four-and-a-half when he came home and had severe orthopedic needs. So we’re like, we live in the Chicago area, this is great there are so many orthopedic doctors.”

Johnson said she quickly learned she’d need to seek medical attention elsewhere.

“At one of the hospitals, he would bear crawl around. That’s how he would get around,” she said. “One of the doctors said he gets around just fine, and for us, that was just not acceptable. So, a surgeon told us about the Paley Institute.”

The surgeries then started for several of her children adopted from China with severe orthopedic needs.

“We’ve been here a lot the last three years. Probably more than we’ve been home,” said Johnson.

“Its been a journey,” said Paley.

On the ten year anniversary, Paley reflected on how he ended up here.

“I never imagined myself in a community hospital like st Marys in a town called beach, he said.

Paley Institute Takes On The Hardest Orthopedic Cases

A decade ago, Dr. Dror Paley was dealing with empty nest syndrome.

Then 53, the world-renowned pediatric orthopedic surgeon was recently divorced, his three adult children were on their own and “I was looking for someplace warm to restart my life.”

At the time, Paley was living in Baltimore, Md., where he was the founder and director of the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics, and the director of the International Center for Limb Lengthening at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore.

Then, as now, Paley a Canadian native who speaks six languages specialized in taking on the most challenging orthopedic cases.

His patients some of whom were still toddlers and their families traveled from all over the world to be treated by him.

“I knew I could practice anywhere in the world and I’ve always loved Palm Beach County,” he says. “When I met with the people at St. Mary’s Medical Center, it was the right fit.”

That was in 2009.

In the decade since the Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute at St. Mary’s Medical Center was founded, the facility keeps expanding, growing from 10 employees to 100 and treating thousands of young patients whose congenital malformations often can’t be treated anywhere else.

“We take on the hardest cases,” Paley says of the Institute’s patients, who’ve come from all 50 states and more than 90 countries.

Patients like 11-year-old Mariel Estrin of Connecticut, who has been getting treated at the Institute since she was 18 months old.

  • How Does It Work

Paley Institute & Limb Lengthening Innovation: Past, Present and Future.

The limb lengthening process works by gradually growing new bone and soft tissues . Bone and soft tissue regenerate when they are pulled apart at a very slow rate, a process known as distraction. The rate of distraction is typically one millimeter per day. Any faster and the bone may fail to form in the gap, muscles will become contracted, and nerves may become paralyzed any slower and the bone will reform in the gap, a process known as premature consolidation, which halts the lengthening.

Lengthening is divided into two phases: distraction and consolidation. Lengthening happens during the distraction phase. After the desired length is obtained, the newly regenerated bone is still very weak. The hardening and calcification of this new bone is called the consolidation phase.

Since the existence of the earliest , many Jews have aspired to to “Zion” and the “Land of Israel”, though the amount of effort that should be spent towards such an aim was a matter of dispute. After the Jews were in 1492, some communities settled in Palestine. In the second half of the 18th century, Eastern European of , known as the , settled in Palestine.

“Therefore I believe that a wonderous generation of Jews will spring into existence. The Maccabaeans will rise again. Let me repeat once more my opening words: The Jews wish to have a State, and they shall have one. We shall live at last as free men on our own soil, and die peacefully in our own home. The world will be freed by our liberty, enriched by our wealth, magnified by our greatness. And whatever we attempt there to accomplish for our own welfare will react with beneficent force for the good of humanity.”
