Physical Therapy Vs Podiatry For Foot Injuries And Problems

Dr. Hoy helped me with my foot issue. He was even able to diagnosis and give me advice on an ankle problem that no physical therapist had been able to crack. Highly recommend. -Patricia M.

Physical therapists and podiatrists are two groups of providers that render treatment to patients with foot and ankle injuries or problems. What can each group offer for foot and ankle injuries and problems?

Physical therapists evaluate quality of function and movement and utilize methods of strengthening and balance to restore function. Podiatrists are physicians and surgeons of the foot and ankle.

Whereas a physical therapist concentrates on rehabilitation, a podiatrist will concentrate on assessment and treatment. A podiatric physician evaluates the structure and function of all systems of the foot and ankle and may perform or order imaging studies such as x-rays and MRIs if needed to diagnose the problem, and utilize various treatments to address the problem, including physical therapy, other non-surgical modalities, or surgery.

If there are fractures, dislocations or tendon tears, for example, initial immobilization for a certain period of time is needed to help the weight bearing structures to heal. Podiatrists will prescribe the proper immobilization if resting the injured part is needed, or strengthening and activity if that is needed. It is advisable to seek the opinion of a podiatrist to see if other treatment is required, or just rehabilitation.

Myth #5 Theres No Treatment For A Broken Toe

Doctors can, in fact, treat a broken toe. A podiatrist will use digital radiography, a modern type of x-ray, to see if any bones have been fractured or damaged by means of arthritis, infection, or another condition. Surgery may be the answer, and if so, treatment may include inserting a pin, plate, or screw to reposition the bone.

    What Our Patients Are Saying

I had a bone spur for over 20 years. It caused severe pain in not just my foot, but my hip and back as well. I walked with a limp and tried everything possible to get relief. I did not want surgery and Dr. Aquino mentioned MLS laser treatment. I was extremely skeptical at first and my late husband thought it was just about money because the MLS treatment isn’t covered by insurance. I decided to go ahead and try the treatments and I drove 150 miles 3 times a week to get it with the Foot & Ankle Center. No one closer had one. I am so grateful I did. I was so impressed by my progress and in how Dr. Aquino treated me during the process. I think every foot clinic should have one and everything insurance should cover it. It was a night and day difference in my life. I’m so thankful for Dr. Aquino and the staff at FAC.

    -Darlean K.

Dr. Kranzusch has been treating me for 5 years. Hes always thorough. This time I had an additional problem with my feet and he made sure to treat the issue aggressively just like my athletic trainer would in my playing days. I look forward to my new orthotics and being pain-free. Thanks, Dr. K and staff.

    -Kevin K.

    -Joseph S.

Great Dr, understanding and compassionate. They ALL take time to listen and explain things to you. It takes a little more time but is TOTALLY worth it if you need anything done to your feet. I will be most likely having surgery and have complete confidence.

Myth #3 Duct Tape Is Great For Removing Warts

    Family Foot and Ankle Center

Some people believe duct tape suffocates the wart by depriving the skin cells of oxygen. However, studies have mixed results.

Duct tape is particularly ineffective in treating plantar warts. These warts, also known as verruca plantaris, are caused by direct contact with the human papillomavirus . They also grow deep into the skin.

Myth #4 Cut A V In The Center Of The Nail To Cure An Ingrown Toenail

Timonium Foot And Ankle Center New Laser Therapy

When a toenail is ingrown, its corner or side grows downward and into the skin. Cutting a V shape wont help, as new nail growth happens at the base of the nail, under the cuticle.

Its not recommended to cut or pick at your ingrown toenail at home. Instead, consult a podiatrist. Depending on the state of infection, surgery may be required. A procedure known as partial nail avulsion works to remove ingrown toenails.
