Bones in the feet are at risk because they are required to bear body weight during all upright activities physical activity.
Throughout an athletes career, its common to experience foot pain. Whether in gymnastics, soccer, basketball or dance, athletes who constantly use their feet to move quickly, jump or change directions can suffer from foot pain on the side of their foot including stress fractures.
Athletes are not the only group to experience pain on the side of their foot. Everyday activities as simple as wearing improper footwear or a lack of nutrients can lead to a foot pain. These things can cause a lot of problems, not only for your feet but also for other joints, such as your hips and knees.

Pain In Outside Of Foot When Walking
Complicated tendonitis happens when the tendons become swollen. This can be caused by overuse or ankle injuries. Pain, weakness, swelling, and warmth are some of the symptoms of peronealtendonitis. You could also feel a popping sensation in your foot. Peroneals tend to be painful, but theyre not always obvious.
If you notice any of the following symptoms, see your doctor right away: Your foot may feel hot or hot to the touch, especially if its hot in the summer or cold in winter. This can be a sign that youre overheating or that your body is trying to cool you down. Its also a good idea to keep your feet warm and dry.
Your feet may be swollen, red, tender, or tender to touch. These are signs of inflammation or infection. What Causes Pain On Outside Of Foot Near Little Toes

If you have pain on the side of foot near little toes, it could be due to Arthritis, cuboid syndrome, or a stress fracture.
Cuboid syndrome causes pain on the upper outer part side of the foot that is aggravated by pressure on the affected area. Cuboid syndrome pain is also felt around the little toes, between the 4th and 5th metatarsals.
Arthritis can cause pain on left or right side of the foot. If you are obese or more than 55 years, its likely foot pain could be arthritis. Otherwise, if you feel pain in multiple joints of your body, its likely to be Rheumatoid arthritis that occurs when your immune cells fight its own tissues.
A stress fracture usually happens at the second and third metatarsal bones. However, it could affect the lateral metatarsals.

Extensor tendonitis is often associated with muscle imbalances such as extremely tight calf muscles, overtraining, or running hills.
Extensor tendonitis may also be caused by lacing the shoes too tightly or by wearing shoes that are too small or do not fit properly.
Examine your running shoes to see if they are causing a pressure point on the top of your foot.
If you do a lot of uphill running, especially on atreadmill, your foot extensor tendons can become overstressed and swollen.
Stretching all muscles, including the muscles along the front of your shin, and stretching your calf muscle is your best bet for mild extensor tendonitis.
Reducing inflammation with ice or anti-inflammatories can help however, you should consult your healthcare provider before taking anti-inflammatories.
You can also try self-massage on tight muscles with a massage tool such as a foam roller.
You should rest for a few days, but once the extensor tendon is no longer inflamed, you can progressively increase your running without pain.
If your shoes are too tight, try a different lacing pattern and slightly loosen your laces.
Lace your shoes around the shoe tongue in a ladder pattern rather than a traditional crisscross pattern to reduce the pressure on the top of your foot.

Location Of Pain: Skin On Bottom Of Foot
If the skin on the bottom of your feet is hurting, you could be dealing with any number of issues, including blisters and athletes foot.
Blisters, or small bubbles of skin filled with clear fluid, are very common among runners. If you have a blister and its not painful, just leave it alone, since the skin serves as protection. It will eventually break and the fluid will drain. If the blister is painful, then boil a needle for 5 to 10 minutes in water and, once cool, carefully pierce the blister. Press the fluid out and use an antiseptic cream on it. Cover the area with a product such as Band-Aid Blister Block or moleskin to protect against infection and provide cushioning.
Athletes foot is a fungal infection that thrives in damp, sweaty places. Common symptoms of athletes foot include itching, stinging, and burning between your toes and on your soles, extremely dry skin on the bottoms or sides of your feet, and peeling skin on your feet.
Youll need to treat athletes foot with an antifungal cream.4 Ask your health care professional or pharmacist for a recommendation of an over-the-counter or prescription cream. How Can I Treat My Peroneal Tendonitis Pain
When it comes to treatments, the rarity of the injury again makes things difficult. Theres no controlled clinical trials that lay out a rehab program to follow.
Nevertheless, we can make some inferences from what we know about the injury. And follow the recommendations of scientists and doctors with clinical experience.
According to Daniel S. Heckman and others at the University of North Carolina, treatment should include rest , stretching, strengthening. And proprioceptive exercises to restore proper functioning of the tendon.7
From what we know about the function of the peroneal tendons, it follows that any strengthening program should be focused on eversion of the foot against resistance, probably using an elastic band.
A similar strengthening program is proposed for Posterior Tibial Tendonitis by Alvarez et al., which we can adapt for peroneal tendonitis by focusing on eversion of the foot instead of inversion .8
The adapted program involves doing 200 repeats of the eversion exercise every day. Starting with a very weak resistance band, and taking breaks if you need to.
Over time, you should progress towards being able to do all 200 repeats consecutively, and towards using a stronger resistance band.
For stretching, your best bet is to focus on Stretching Out Your Calf Muscles. Since tight calves could cause a more rapid transfer of stress onto your midfoot during running, which would increase demands on the peroneal tendons.

You Lose Your Toenails
Ideally, your foot will rest securely in your shoe with each stride. However, unlike your favorite pair of casual shoes, your toes should not touch the end of your shoe when you run, even on a downhill slope. If you tend to lose toenails when you run, you may need a half size bigger than you are currently wearing.
Bone Injuries In The Ball Of The Foot

There are five long metatarsal bones in the ball of each foot . The first metatarsal bone is the strongest and thus less prone to overuse injury. There are also two sesamoid bones underneath the end of the first metatarsal bones, which are prone to taking a long time to heal or not healing if a bone stress injury diagnosis is delayed. Bone stress injuries sit on a continuum, starting with a mild injury and progressing towards more severe injuries with longer recovery times .

Dr. Richardson says you can make several modifications to your running routine to prevent outer foot pain:

After diagnosis, the next treatment step is to design a suitable rehabilitation plan consisting of carefully selected exercises and stretches. Over time, this rehabilitation plan should: 1) Reduce levels of discomfort and inflammation that may be experienced during the acute period of injury. 2) Restore the feet back to their full physiological range of motion. 3) Improve core foot stability and balance. 4) Increase foot flexibility and strength to help avoid the risk of any future strains or injury
Stretches
Stretches in the calf and the plantar area are helpful. Calf stretches as shown are done by standing towards the wall with the feet staggered. With calf stretching, you can improve the flexibility of the flexor muscles. This makes the Achilles tendon that continues down to the plantar fascia more flexible and less prone to wear.
