Creating The Next Generation Oforthopaedic Leaders
Our full educational experience provides one of the most diverse learning opportunities in orthopaedics. This experience is possible because of our nationally recognized faculty, the facultys dedication to teaching, and all five training facilities which are located within the confines of Salt Lake City. These facilities, all located within a one mile radius, include University of Utah Hospital, Primary Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospital for Children, The Huntsman Cancer Institute and the Veteran Affairs Medical Center. It is rare to find a program that offers such an immense compilation of all specialties centrally located for residents.
Clinical Training
Each resident is selected because he or she has demonstrated outstanding promise and, therefore, justifies a five-year commitment of the facilities at the University of Utah and its affiliated hospitals and educators. Residents are given a broad exposure to outpatient clinics, the operating room and the emergency department. Clinical responsibility is given in accordance with the resident’s ability to assume it. Supervision is always provided, but on an individual and graduated basis. Our educational experience leads to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Conferences
Every year the department hosts an Alumni Reception at AAOS. All resident alumni are invited each year to attend and reconnect at the reception.

As a student I have excelled in all of my classes. This is demonstrated in my high GPA. I have also sought many opportunities in helping other students succeed. I enjoy participating in group studies and find satisfaction in helping others do well on test. I have been a chemistry tutor for 9 semesters, a chemistry lab TA, and directed a volunteer tutoring center. I have also participated in sports. I played on a school league basketball team. L S Peery Md Orthopaedic Innovation Center
The Louis S. Peery, MD Orthopaedic Innovation Center was created by the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Utah for the purpose of ensuring that faculty, fellows, residents, students and external collaborators have access to innovation and commercialization resources to move early orthopaedic related medical device concepts, ideas and discoveries through the product development and commercialization process.
The LSP OIC is staffed with experienced biomedical engineers and prototyping specialists to invent, design, build and test patentable medical device innovations that can make meaningful improvements to the outcomes and quality of orthopaedic patient care, and that also have promising commercial prospects. Additional resources include a dedicated prototype shop that has full manufacturing capabilities for producing commercial quality prototypes of surgical instruments and implantable devices. Moreover, the LSP OIC has implemented an innovative, streamlined, product development process that is fully compliant with the US FDA Quality System Requirements and the international standard ISO 13485: Medical devices Quality Management Systems, which will further enhance potential commercial value.
In collaboration with the PIVOT Center, developed medical device inventions will be patented and marketed with the goal to license to industry or to spin out into start-up companies.

“I was bitterly disappointed with my ankle-surgery and healthcare experience with Dr. Nickisch. Over the course of 6 months he walked out of every appointment abruptly, leaving me with unaddressed concerns and no practicable advice. When I followed up, he would either reply through his staff with one word answers or else refuse to answer any questions at all, saying, “We already went over everything,” when we had not. He gaslighted me on several occasions and turned his staff against me, casting me as the anxious or worried type and not worthy of their time and care. Follow-up appointments were always administered mostly through his resident assistants, with only a brief visit by him. The surgery note and some of the surgery was performed by his resident without informing me and he left the surgery early. It took 10 weeks to hear from him how the surgery went. The important joint alignment, the whole reason for the surgery, ended up somewhat flawed with what a second opinion called a “malalignment.””

“I have been Dr. Powell’s patient for about ten years. I have a very high degree of respect and appreciation for her. I see her exclusively for one procedure which she does very well. I continue to be her patient not only for that but because I know I can trust her. She will always do her best to answer my questions and if she doesn’t know the answer she’s completely up front about saying so.
