If you have large calves or a lot of swelling of your lower leg you will require a walking boot with adjustable uprights to fit your lower leg. The boot must be made so that the uprights can be bent outward to accommodate larger calves.
There are few medical boots on the market that fit those with wide calves. Our favorite is the DonJoy MaxTrax Walker Brace.
The Donjoy MaxTrax has malleable upright which can be bent out to accommodate for larger lower legs. It also is wider than average around the foot and ankle.

Should I Wear The Boot While Showering
While it is ideal to keep wearing the boot while showering to avoid putting any undue weight on it, if you do not prefer getting the boot wet, you can simply remove it, and sit on a chair for your bath time. Of course, you can also cover the boot with a large plastic bag if you want to take a standing shower. This will help keep the boot dry while ensuring that you do not put any unwanted weight or pressure on the injured foot.
At All Costs Avoid Walking In A Damp Footwear
If you have a wet bootstrapped on your foot, your foot is at risk of contracting a fungal infection. Some of these illnesses are hard to cure and can even be fatal. Make sure that you keep your feet dry whenever possible. Do not put your boot on if needed. If this is not feasible, use a pair of cotton socks to cushion the foot inside of the boot.
If you must be in your walking boot during a shower, keep it dry. This may be accomplished by putting a waterproof plastic bag around the boot. This could also come in useful if youre out for a rainy stroll. While walking, its a good idea to wear thick, moisture-wicking socks. This will prevents sweaty feet from getting inside the boots while also absorbing sweat and keeping the feet dry.

You Must Use Arch Support Inside The Boot To Stabilize The Foot
Using an arch support inside the boot will further stabilize the foot in order to promote healing and decrease pain. A full length semi-rigid orthotic with a good amount of arch support works best.

A Cane Can Help When Used Correctly
If you have an injured foot or ankle and are wearing a boot to protect your injured limb, using a cane in the opposite hand can reduce 30 40% of the force you are putting on the injured side. This can dramatically decrease pain and make it easier for you to move around comfortably.
Many people use canes incorrectly by holding the cane on the same side as the injury. In fact, canes should be used in the opposite hand and you should move your cane forward at the same time as the injured foot. So if you are in a boot, the boot and the cane should be hitting the ground at the same time.
Especially during the first week or so of an injury, when it is at its most painful, a cane can be very helpful. Here is an inexpensive cane that we often recommend for our patients.

What Are The Components Of Walking Boots
A walking boot comprises of

The answer to this question is a simple no. What Does Rice Mean
When I hurt my foot a few years back and had to go to the hospital I was told by my doctor that I needed to follow the RICE for at least the first week. What is RICE? For those of you who dont know it stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate. So to break this down further here is what this means.
- Rest: stay off of your foot as much as possible for the first few days.
- Ice: For three times a day you want to ice your foot for 20 minutes.
- Compression: Your doctor can advise you here. You may want to wear a boot to make your foot comfortable until your foot starts to heal. After some time you could even wear a compression sock.
- Elevate: This means you want your foot propped up over your heart. This means lying down if you need to.

Recent studies on ankle sprain treatment have shown that immobilization in a cast boot for the first two weeks will allow proper healing of the injured ligaments to begin. We put every ankle sprain patient in a boot initially. Dont try to diagnose an ankle sprain on your own see a podiatrist.
How long to wear it: Wear the medical walking boot for two weeks following an ankle sprain.
Short or Tall Boot? Always use the tall boot for ankle sprains. The short one does not provide adequate ankle protection.
Regular or Pneumatic Boot? The less expensive regular tall boot should work fine for ankle sprains.
How Is A Walking Boot Supposed To Fit
- In most cases, your podiatrist or the medical supply store will fit you for the boot ahead of time.

On a daily basis, as often as possible. Some people say that its okay not to wear a walking boot or a cast at night because its the pressure that is important, not the weight. Follow The Doctors Advice
Assure that you follow all of your physical therapists recommendations. If they advise, you should rest more and move less, fine. If you must practice till you feel a touch of discomfort, do not disregard it.
If your feet get swollen after the suggested walking time, attempt to rest and relax. Elevate your foot and, if necessary, apply some ice cubes. If the swelling does not subside or is accompanied by severe discomfort, you should see a physician.

Metatarsal stress fractures should always be immobilized in a boot. Like all fractures, metatarsal stress fractures will heal faster and better when they are immobilized. The easiest way to do this is to use a medical boot. If a stress fracture is suspected you should see a doctor as soon as possible.
How long to wear it? Depending on the type of fracture, most of our patients are in a boot 2 4 weeks. Wear the boot until you can get an x-ray and a doctor can tell you if are ready to come out of the boot.
Tall Boot or Short Boot? Always use a tall boot for metatarsal fractures. This is necessary because many of the muscles that attach into the metatarsal region start in the leg. If you have a stress fracture you want to limit motion of the foot by immobilizing those muscles.
Regular or Pneumatic Boot? The less expensive regular tall boot should work fine for metatarsal stress fractures.

Walking boots are also known as walking casts. Theyre used to heal injuries to the foot, ankle, or lower leg while stabilizing the injured area. The boots are usually made of polypropylene or PVC and have an upper part that covers most of the foot and a lower cuff that stabilizes around the top of your calf muscle. If youve had a fracture in your leg, foot, or toe recently but were not hospitalized for more than 24hrs, you are probably given a walking boot before being discharged from care.
A walking boot assists in stabilizing the foot and allowing it to recover. It may help you avoid putting too much weight on a particular region, such as your toe, while it recovers. The majority of boots feature between two and five adjustable straps that run mid-calf. Many also feature a Velcro strap at the top of the boot. Boots are usually recommended for about six weeks after injury in order to allow the foot to heal at its natural speed.
Before you can wear a walking boot, your doctor will have to determine if its the right recovery option for you. Since it is an alternative recovery method, there are certain situations when medical professionals may not recommend it.
