Treatment Of Mrs X Arch Pain
It was explained to Mrs X that she needed to lose weight in order to help her fatigued feet and reduce this chronic and acute arch pain. She was already aware of this and explained she cant walk for exercise, to burn the calories. She was advised to swim and perform resistance training for her upper body. Mrs X enquired about the use of prescription orthotics. She felt her feet were more unstable since gaining weight. The Sports Podiatrist explained to Mrs X that the orthotics were a valid treatment option, and that the Carbon Fibre material would be the preferred choice. These are a firm material but are streamlined and less bulky, and so fit into more shoes more easily. They would have slow release poron to provide cushioning and the support from these orthotics would reduce the strain on the whole foot, particularly the arch. This would allow the arch pain to resolve over time, as the micro tears and inflammation subsided.
What Are The Arches Of The Foot
There are twenty-six bones in the foot.
The tarsal and metatarsal bones fit together in the middle of the foot and are supported by various ligaments, muscles and tendons to form the foot arches.
The arches of the foot support the foot and control how the forces associated with activities like walking are transferred up and down the leg.
There are two main arches in the foot, the longitudinal arch which runs down the length of the foot , and the transverse arch which runs across the width of the foot.
Thelongitudinal arch can be split into two:
- Medial Longitudinal Arch: the higher of the two found in the inner side of the foot
- Lateral Longitudinal Arch: found on the outer side of the foot
Anything which affects the position of the arches can lead to foot arch pain and discomfort on the bottom of the foot.
What Causes Foot Cramp When Swimming
Foot cramps can happen in swimmers of all abilities. Two main causes for muscle cramps have been proposed in a recent review published in Sports Medicine , including changes in hydration status and electrolyte balance and altered neuromuscular control.
A previous study in the International Journal of Sports Medicine investigated American football players, with one group having no history of cramping, and another group who were cramp-prone. The group who were more prone to cramp consumed a greater percentage of plain water than electrolyte sports drinks with greater sweat sodium concentrations.
This study demonstrated that disturbances in water and salt balances can influence the likelihood of cramp occuring.
“This same principle relates to all sports, including swimming. Hard physical effort, high ambient temperature and large sweat losses accompanied by the ingestion of large volumes of plain water may be risk factors, and there is some evidence that the risk is reduced by the addition of salt to ingested fluids,” says sports scientist Emily Codd.

What Is The Treatment For Foot Spasms

If youre overpronating, the weight of your body presses your feet inward and you push off from your big toes while walking or running. Since this is more pressure than your toes can handle, they send the burden up the leg to your knees and even your back. Overpronation often causes shin splints, too.

How Can You Alleviate Foot Cramp Immediately
Cramp can often be relieved by passive stretching or massaging of the muscle.
“If you end up with foot cramp during a swimming session, make your way to the wall and stretch the foot in a slow gentle manner and massage the area. Do not try to swim through the cramp as this may cause muscle stiffness for days after. If the cramp eases, carry on swimming at a slower pace,” advises Codd.
And if you are in open water or cannot get to the side of the pool roll onto your back while you recover and ensure you have a drink of water or electrolytes before swimming again.
“If you have tried all of the strength work and are drinking lots of fluid and it still keeps happening then it is worth going to a nutritionist and getting it looked at further to make sure you are recovering and replenishing properly,” advises O’Leary.

If you do too much of an activity too soon or work your feet too strenuously, you may experience fatigue in your muscles. According to McClanahan, treatment depends on the source of the pain, and there are many medical issues that may result in foot cramps. These include an electrolyte abnormality , lack of circulation, side effects of certain medications , or various nerve problems. In these cases, the medical condition must be treated to relieve the foot cramps. More often, however, cramping occurs as the result of simple muscular imbalance.
Most people feel cramps in the bottom plantar intrinsic muscles, also called the arch flexor muscles, which stretch from your heel to the tips of your toes. Most of us living in the modern developed world tend to wear shoes with elevated heels. Studies comparing women who walk in 2 heels to women who walk in flat soles show that heel-wearers tend to have shorter calf muscles, though even slightly elevated heels on casual shoes for both men and women can have similar effects. In addition, most of our conventional shoes feature toe springs that prop up the ends of toes above the ball of the foot, which tighten the surrounding muscles even more.
For lengthened arch muscles to function properly again, they need to be returned to their proper length to tension relationship, meaning the tension caused by elevated heels and toe springs needs to be relieved for the cramps to go away.

Warm Up Before You Run

Another potential cause of arch pain is a nodule called plantar fibroma that forms in the plantar fascia. It can develop in either or both feet and is benign. But, it can grow in size and more than one may develop.
Its unclear what causes this knot in the foot arch, but it is treatable. If you notice a firm lump in the arch of the foot that is painful when you push on it, it might be plantar fibroma.
