Understanding The Musculoskeletal System

Whether youve had trouble bouncing back from a sports-related injury, or your age-related aches and pains have become intolerable, it may be time to talk to a Mercy orthopedic specialist. An orthopedic physician specializes in conditions affecting bones and muscles, also called the musculoskeletal system. Your musculoskeletal system is the network of bones, muscles and tissues that frame your body and allow it to move. It includes:

  • Your skeleton, which supports your body weight and protects your organs
  • Muscles that let you move almost every part of your body, from standing and walking to typing or throwing
  • Joints, where two bones connect and allow specialized movement such as bending or turning. Major joints include your shoulders, hips and knees
  • Tendons, tissue that attaches your muscles to your bones
  • Ligaments, tissue that attaches bones to other bones
  • Cartilage, a rubbery tissue that covers the ends of many bones, allowing them to glide against each other

Healthcare Leader: Ryan Gehrig

Nov 04, 2014 at 01:29 pm by admin

President of Mercy Hospital Fort Smith

Starting at age 14, Ryan Gehrig, joined in a family tradition by leaving his home in Muenster, Texas, to attend Subiaco Academy, a Catholic College Preparatory boarding school.

My father and older brother went to Subiaco, and it was great experience moving away from home at an early age and building a foundation in Benedictine principles of humility, service and hospitality, Gehrig said. I may have not have realized it at the time, but God certainly played a key role in my choice of careers. A higher power helped guide me.

His faith-based foundation has served him well in both his current role at Mercy Hospital Fort Smith and his previous healthcare management positions. At Mercy, the mission statement is, As the Sisters of Mercy before us, we bring to life the healing ministry of Jesus through our compassionate care and exceptional service.

In October the new $42-million Mercy Orthopedic Hospital in Fort Smith opened as a 24-bed stand-alone hospital designed to provide complete care for healthy patients in need of total joint replacement. Mercy Fort Smith, which has 2,100 employees, is soon to be a 500-bed system.

Mercy also has four school-based clinics that are located in Mansfield, Waldron, Cedarville and Magazine.

Preferential treatment is given to students, but the clinics are open to the community. And services are available regardless of the ability of the patient to pay.

Mercy Cooper Merger Official

Improvements to access, patient care, technology and better recruitment of physicians to Fort Smith are the benefits being touted to patients in the integration of Cooper Clinic, P.A. with Mercy Clinic Fort Smith.

The plan to combine the two organizations, each with very long local histories, became official Wednesday. As previously reported by the Times Record, the boards of directors of Cooper Clinic and Mercy Clinic approved the agreement last month.

By combining the two groups, we are not recruiting against each other, said Dr. Cole Goodman, president of Mercy Clinic. There is one pool of physicians to recruit from, and thats it, just one in this country, and they can go wherever they want. So in recruiting to Fort Smith, we are much better off to have the two groups together as one unit than separately.

Cooper Clinics 97-year history of quality care is a strong fit with Mercys legacy of caring for patients in the Arkansas River Valley since 1853, Goodman added.

Physicians with Cooper Clinic have had privileges with Mercy and Sparks Regional Medical Center. Although some physicians have signed up as Sparks doctors, for patients there will few external changes.

Mercy Clinic has no plans for any turnover in staff, Goodman said.

In many cases when patients come in, they are going to see the same people greeting them and many of the same doctors, added Todd Nighswonger, media relations specialist for Mercy.
