How To Get Rid Of Ankle Biter Mosquitoes

How Did Invasive Aedes Mosquitoes Get Here

‘Ankle biter’ mosquitoes becoming more common in OC | ABC7

In 2011 our staff identified a thriving population of Aedes albopictus in the city of El Monte. The mosquito was able to use stagnant water in flower pots, planters, and watered vegetation surrounding peoples homes. In subsequent years, Aedesaegypti and Aedesnotoscriptus were also identified in the Los Angeles area.

Reports started coming in of localized infestations up and down the entire state of California. The statewide infestation of invasive Aedes is due to multiple introductions from shipments of goods contaminated with mosquito eggs. People moving with plants and containers can also carry Aedes eggs.

How Do I Prevent These Mosquitoes From Breeding In My Yard

After reading that last section, you might be thinking, How do I keep these ankle-biters out of my yard to begin with? The answer: eliminate breeding grounds.

Another little science lesson: Do you know how long it takes for a mosquito egg to hatch?

The answer? ONE TO THREE DAYS!

When you take into account that a single female mosquito can lay upwards of 100 to 200 eggs at a time, you can see how an infestation can quickly take place. This can turn your backyard into the last place you want to spend time with your kids.

Do Tadpoles Eat Mosquito Larvae

In both study systems, mosquitoes reduced the growth rates of tadpoles, and tadpoles reduced the growth rates and survival of mosquito larvae. Even at high levels of pesticide exposure, these negative effects were seen.

The researchers also found that the larval growth rate of mosquitoes was reduced when they were exposed to the insecticide chlorpyrifos, which is widely used in the U.S. and around the world as a pesticide to control mosquitoes and other pests.

The larva of these mosquitoes were also less likely to survive to adulthood, suggesting that this pesticide may have a negative effect on the development of adult mosquitoes. In addition, the larvae of the mosquitoes that were treated with the pesticide did not grow as fast as those that had not been exposed.

This suggests that these effects may be due to other factors, such as the presence of other insecticides or other pesticides that are not present in this study.

Why Are They Called No

No-See-Ums are called that for a reason theyre tiny flying insects that are so small, theyre practically impossible to spot. But though you may not notice them flying around, youll definitely notice the mark they leave itchy bites on legs or other exposed skin.

No-See-Um bites leave a small red dot right away, which may expand to a raised, itchy, mildly painful 1-2 diameter welt. Since No-See-Ums travel in large groups and often bite multiple times, you may notice a cluster of bites in one spot.

Since No-See-Ums are so small, theyre hard to swat away or keep out of your home. In fact, theyre even small enough to get through screens on your windows and doors. If you got a No-See-Um bite while in your home or backyard, that may be a sign that a group of them have made a home in your neighborhood and will be back for more.

How To Avoid Breeding Mosquitoes

SoCal Sees Ankle Biter Mosquito Invasion | NBCLA

Mosquitoes can go from an egg into an adult in as short as seven days, according to NBC Los Angeles. That means they could easily reproduce to thousands if people wait for a week to get rid of them. To prevent that, the news outlet has listed some things to follow:

  • Get rid of stagnant water– Aedes mosquitoes could reproduce in any amount of water. They could establish a breeding ground in just a cupful of water and complete their life cycle in it. they can breed indoors and outdoors so make sure that there are no open containers filled with water sitting inside or outside the house. Also, check for water in buckets, plant saucers, old tires, fountains, swimming pools, and even recyclables. Drain these objects if there is water present.
  • Use insect repellant– insect repellants help chase away mosquitoes. Make sure to use those products that contain DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and IR3535.
  • Natural interventions– there is a wonderful natural solution to these mosquitoes, like the large female mosquito fish that can eat up 100 mosquito larvae per day. They are best for pools, birdbaths, fountains, and other water troughs that are not consistently maintained.

Why Aedes Mosquitoes Are So Pesky

Omar Akbari is an associate professor of cell and developmental biology at UC San Diego. He says the Aedes are becoming predominant, which means the species is becoming the main type of mosquito. The problem: theyre more difficult to get rid of.

The tools we have to control them, the insecticides and the larvicides, they do work, Akbari said. But these mosquitoes, they can breathe in little small containers a little bottle cap. They can lay their eggs, and their eggs can completely out and sit there for an entire year. And then when it rains, they just kind of hatch out.

Ironically, the regions drought-related water restrictions could work in our favor. Less water could mean fewer mosquitoes hatching. Diaz said shes waiting to see if that will affect how much the Aedes mosquitoes spread this year.

An alternative to chemical-based sprays or creams are ones with plant-based ingredients such as citronella, lavender and peppermint. Markowski said these ingredients are less effective than their synthetic counterparts, they can work for you if mosquitoes dont find you powerfully attractive.

You can also try to make the outdoor area youll be hanging out in inhospitable to mosquitoes by setting up several tiki torches or other devices that diffuse repellent. But the efficacy of diffusers can vary according to the species of mosquito. Try them one at a time until you find an approach that works best for you.

Certain plants can offer some level of protection to your patio too. These include citronella and a few other geranium varieties, marigolds, lemongrass, catnip, certain types of mint, lavender, and lantana. There are also common aromatic herbs that have limited ability to drive off mosquitoes, such as rosemary, garlic, basil, thyme and fennel. No, you do not have to wear the garlic around your neck.

If mosquitoes manage to bite you despite all these precautions, dont scratch! Markowski said scratching can cause secondary infection and prolong the irritation. In extreme cases, people can scar themselves.

What’s The Big Deal About Aedes Mosquitoes Anyway

They are efficient at transmitting several fatal human arboviruses including chikungunya, dengue, Yellow Fever and Zika virus. In recent U.S. history, Aedes mosquitoes were responsible for Zika outbreaks in Florida, Texas, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Although there have been no instances of local transmission of any of these tropical diseases yet, the potential for these diseases to make their way into the population is very real. If you travel , please be aware you could be a carrier of these diseases and not know it! If a local Aedes mosquito bites a local person who is infected with one of these tropical diseases due to their travles, the disease could potentially enter the local mosquito population.

Heres How You Make It Yourself In 6 Steps

Step 1 Use a blade to slice off the top section of the soda container, just below where the neck of the bottle flares out to meet the main section of the bottle.

Step 2 Invert the neck of the bottle so that it looks like a funnel, and place it into the body of the bottle. Be careful not to push it all the way down. You want to leave enough space between the neck of the bottle and the bottom of the larger piece.

Step 3 Seal the escape route with duct tape. The duct tape will hold the funnel in place and will also seal the edges of the funnel against the edges of the bottle.

Step 4 Spray the entire trap with black spray paint and let it dry the dark coloring will block out the sunlight which will help the bait to last longer.

Step 5 Make the mosquito bait by adding 1/4 cup of brown sugar to 1 cup of boiling water. Stir the mixture thoroughly until the sugar is dissolved completely. Let the mixture cool to 120-degrees Fahrenheit and then mix in the yeast. Then, pour the mixture into the bottle, and your trap will be ready to go.

Step 6 Set the trap outside in a shady part of your yard. Ideally, these traps should be placed around the perimeter of your yard, and too close to your patio or where people will be hanging out. You can also use this trap indoors I suggest in your common areas, and not too close to the kitchen or the bedrooms.
