Nyc’s Hospital For Special Surgery Named No 1 Orthopedic Hospital Worldwide
The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City was named the best orthopedic hospital in the world by Newsweek in its “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2022” list.
The publication partnered with Statista to compile the list, which ranks hospitals in 10 specializations: cardiology, cardiac surgery, oncology, endocrinology, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, gastroenterology, pulmonology and pediatrics. The companies conducted a global survey of more than 40,000 medical experts from more than 20 countries from June to August.
The orthopedic list features 125 hospitals worldwide. Here are the top 10:
Orthopedic Surgery : A Quick Return To Health
Montreal Institute for Special Surgery is the authority in orthopedic surgery by arthroscopy of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee. The institute also disposes a special unit of surgery for the wrist and the hand. To complete the service of orthopedics, we offer you surgery of hip and knee replacement. The majority of our patients have difficulty meeting a specialist in the public system. Their names are among many waiting lists in orthopedic surgery that extend to a two-year waiting period. Our fast and humane approach is therefore an essential solution. If necessary, surgery can be scheduled within two weeks. We have understood that a rapid intervention guaranties healing. The inacceptable deadlines in hospital operating rooms risk, on the contrary, to aggravate a wound to the point of becoming a permanent handicap. Do not wait any longer and consult one of our specialists.
Hospital For Special Surgery Ranked No 1 In Orthopedics
For the sixth consecutive year, Hospital for Special Surgery has been ranked the top hospital in the country for orthopedics by U.S. News & World Report in its 2015 Best Hospitals survey. The hospital was also nationally recognized as a leader in rheumatology, ranking No. 3 in association with New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
We are honored to receive the top national recognition in orthopedics with unprecedented consistency, which is an indication of our commitment to delivering value to all patients, said Louis A. Shapiro, president and CEO of HSS. And we are proud that HSS is the choice among patients who want to live life to the fullest. Our patients travel for our care from all 50 states and from more than 100 countries worldwide.
This accolade is a testament to the work of all HSS staff who help patients get back to their own game of life every day, added Dr. Todd J. Albert, surgeon-in-chief and medical director of HSS. The entire clinical process at HSSand all services we provide for patientsis developed to advance care, research and education in our specialty field of musculoskeletal medicine.

Robert Lee Patterson Jr Becomes Surgeon
In 1962, adverse relations between The Hospital for Special Surgery and New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center seriously threatened the continued affiliation agreement between the two hospitals. Because of difficulties over a faculty and staff appointment, Dr. Thompson resigned from the office of Surgeon-in-Chief. He was replaced in 1963 by Robert Lee Patterson, Jr., MD , who had first joined the staff of The Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled in 1936 as a Visiting Surgeon.
T. Campbell Thompson was considered to be one of the best clinicians and surgeons in the hospital by his colleagues and an excellent teacher by his students. In conferences, he would often nod off to short periods of light sleep, but should a question be addressed to him, he immediately awakened and responded with a pertinent and knowledgeable answer. Dr. Thompson continued to practice orthopedics and devoted most of his time to teaching after his retirement as Surgeon-in-Chief. He died in 1986.
