Ankle Sprain

An ankle sprain is a common, painful injury that occurs when one or more of the ankle ligaments is stretched beyond the normal range of motion. Sprains can occur as a result of sudden twisting, turning or rolling movements.

Ankle sprains are categorized by type of motion:

  • Lateral Inversion: Foot rolls inward
  • Medial Eversion: Foot rolls outward
  • Syndesmosis: Foot rolls outward & leg rolls inward

There are three different degrees of ankle sprains from mild to severe. Most sprains are treated with RICE & physical therapy. First degree sprains usually require a wrap, second degree sprains require a brace, and third degree sprains can require a cast, boot, or surgery.

Meet Our Certified Pedorthist

An ABC certified pedorthist is a healthcare professional who is specifically educated and trained to fabricate, fit, adjust and modify devices that aid in the proper functioning of the foot. This includes therapeutic shoes, partial foot prostheses and custom foot orthoses.

Sarah J. Garcia, C-Ped, grew up in Florida but relocated to Richmond in 1992. She started her career in podiatry in 1990. During the ensuing 16 years she worked in several foot and ankle clinics, learning all aspects of podiatric care. In 2006 she joined The Foot & Ankle Center and managed the clinical services. Although Sarah found her duties satisfying she wanted to offer more to her patients as well as her career. While juggling a full time job and her family which includes her husband Victor, son Jordan and daughter Kayla she completed the requirements to sit for the state board exam in pedorthics. She passed the exam on her first attempt , and she is now one of only 3,000 pedorthists in the nation. We are pleased to have her as a part of our podiatric team and family. Sarah offers knowledge, compassion and the drive to always do the best job.

Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Specialist Offering The Latest Treatment Options In The Fairfax Va Area

Video Tour of The Foot & Ankle Center

Working together, your feet and ankles support the entire weight of your body, allowing you to stand, walk, run, jump and move in many other ways. These highly complex structures include 33 joints and more than 100 bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Each day, these various components are subjected to a significant amount of stress, and even more if you play sports or are otherwise active.

As a result, foot and ankle injuries are very common, often resulting from daily wear and tear as well as overuse, sudden movements and trauma. Due to the complexity of the foot and ankle, the expertise of a foot and ankle specialist is needed to effectively treat these injuries. You will find this level of specialized expertise at Nirschl Orthopaedic Center near Fairfax, Virginia. Our foot and ankle specialist, Dr. Matthew Buchanan, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who focuses exclusively on foot and ankle care.
