Tips To Reduce Ankle And Foot Swelling
Simple lifestyle changes such as exercise and weight loss also can help reduce or prevent swelling while also improving your overall health, says Dr. Botek. She suggested activities such as walking and swimming.
Other recommendations include:
- Increasing your overall movement, as sitting or standing in one place for too long can increase swelling. Just moving your knees and flexing your ankles may help.
- Limit your salt and carbohydrate intake.
- Trying essential oils such as peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender or chamomile.
For best results, try using more than one therapy at a time, Dr. Botek says. For example, if you walk for exercise, maybe use compression socks, too and then make sure to elevate your feet later in the day.

Cleveland Foot And Ankle Clinic Seeks New Ways To Heal Diabetic Ulcers
The Cleveland Foot and Ankle Clinic is participating in an FDA trial exploring the use of fresh amniotic tissue to heal diabetic foot ulcers.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — For a healthy person, a cut is a minor annoyance. But for a diabetic, a laceration can turn into a spreading, weeping ulcer that just won’t heal — and in extreme cases, can become infected and lead to possible amputation.
The Cleveland Foot and Ankle Clinic is researching two new therapies that could help. One explores the use of fresh amniotic tissue to heal diabetic foot ulcers. A second trial seeks to stimulate the body’s defenses to get rid of dead tissue surrounding wounds that refuse to heal.
As rates of obesity and diabetes climb, so does the need for diabetic wound care, said Dr. Windy Cole, Wound Care program director at the Cleveland Foot and Ankle Clinic.
The clinic is participating in two multi-site FDA trials looking into these therapies, and wants to sign up diabetics with unhealed wounds to participate in these trials, Cole said.
The clinic, located in midtown Cleveland on Euclid Avenue, is the clinical teaching facility for the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine, where students treat clinic outpatients under faculty supervision.
Cole hopes that the uninsured and underinsured – who usually don’t have access to advanced therapies – sign up for these trials, which come at no cost to the patient. “It’s great to have them come and get top-notch care for free,” she said.

Breakthrough Treatment Fornail Fungus
Dr. Eric Trattner has just introduced a revolutionary new treatment that really works on nail fungus.
If you or someone you know has struggled with nail fungus, you’re likely aware that most available treatments either work sporatically or don’t work at all. Those that do work can take as long as a year to show results.
Dr. Eric Trattner uses Clearanail technology to assist in the treatment of nail fungus.
“Nail fungus is not just a cosmetic concern. It can also lead to other skin and nail problems, especially in diabetics,” says Dr. Eric Trattner, a podiatrist and foot specialist with more than 25 years of experience.
“There are a variety of topical over-the-counter and prescription preparations that have proven to be extremely ineffective,” Dr. Trattner explains. “The success rate with these methods is only 10-15 percent. Oral medications, while more effective , can be toxic to the liver. Other treatments often require removal of the affected toenail.”
That’s all changed now thanks to a remarkable new non-surgical, non-laser technology called Clearanail, previously only available in Europe. “Since learning about the product several years ago, I have been striving to secure the rights to make it available to my own patients. It’s that impressive,” he says.
Dr. Trattner is currently one of just a few podiatrists in North America to offer this treatment, and the only one in Ohio.

What Causes Feet And Ankles To Swell
Swelling happens when your body retains fluid in your lower legs, ankles and feet. It most often occurs on both sides of your body. The result is uncomfortable and can keep you from moving freely.
Possible causes of swollen feet and ankles include:
- Lifestyle factors, such as inactivity or being overweight.
- Medical conditions that affect the movement of fluid in your body. The list would include diseases targeting your heart, kidneys, liver and veins.
- Shoes that dont fit right.
When it comes to swelling, its about management and getting through the day, Dr. Botek says. Theres nothing thats necessarily curative, but you can take steps to ease pain and discomfort.

How To Help Swollen Ankles And Feet
Potential solutions to your swollen feet or ankles could already be in your kitchen cabinet or scattered around your living room. And, if not, a quick trip to the store might be all it takes to find some relief.
Here are a half-dozen easy-to-try home remedies worth some consideration.
Compression socks
A hug sometimes seems like it can make everything better and that sentiment applies to swollen feet and ankles, too.
Compression socks offer a gentle squeeze to your legs that promotes better blood circulation. This helps prevent fluid from collecting in your ankles and feet, which works to minimize swelling and pain.
Finding compression socks wont be difficult. Theyre widely available at various stores, ranging from pharmacies to shoe retailers and online. They also come in a variety of weights, from light, medium and heavier weight.
Dr. Botek suggests starting with lightweight socks. Be sure you select a pair that isnt too tight for your body. Put them on in the morning and wear them as long as you remain comfortable.
Elevation
Gravity never stops working. If you have swollen feet or ankles, let gravity work for you.
Elevating your legs above the level of your heart helps drain built-up fluid from your lower extremities, says Dr. Botek. Basically, you give your circulatory system a little assistance by letting gravity do its thing.
