Types Of Orthopaedic Doctors
Duke orthopaedic specialists work together as a team to identify the source of your pain and recommend treatment options that will help you find relief and improve your range of motion. Your team may include the following orthopaedic specialists.
Orthopaedic Physician Assistants and Nurse PractitionersThey are often the first medical professional you will see and will direct you to the most appropriate provider for your care. They are specially trained in joint and bone pain and injuries and work closely with orthopaedic surgeons. They perform exams, interpret your results, prescribe medication, and assist in orthopaedic surgery.
Physiatrists are physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors who specialize in nonsurgical care for conditions that affect your nerves, bones, and muscles. Duke physiatrists have completed additional training in treating sports or spine conditions, depending on their specialty.
ChiropractorsThey use manual adjustment and/or manipulation to improve joint mobility in a certain area — the spine, neck, middle back, lower back, or pelvis. The goal is to reduce muscle tightness or the irritation of nerves that travel down the arm or leg, which can cause numbness or tingling, pain, or even changes in strength.
Osteopathic DoctorsDuke osteopathic doctors provide a full range of orthopaedic services, from prescribing medicine to performing surgery. They help you prevent and recover from an injury by focusing on a healthy lifestyle.
Division Of Hand Surgery
The Duke Division of Hand Surgery unites the expertise of faculty from surgery, plastic surgery, and orthopaedic surgery into a single group focused on offering the best possible treatment of patients who need hand and upper extremity surgery.
The Division of Hand Surgery is currently led by Dr. David Ruch. We offer advanced care for common hand pain and injuries like arthritis, fractures and cysts, as well as uncommon hand conditions and hand, finger, and thumb reattachments associated with amputation. They also specialize in wrist pain and injury and sports-related injuries. Our plastic surgery hand specialists are leaders in innovative surgeries reattaching amputated hands, fingers, and thumbs, as well as microsurgical techniques to repair nerves and arteries that may be damaged. Duke is one of only about 10 hospitals in the U.S. that has performed a hand transplant.

Duke Orthopaedic Residency Program Ranking In The Top 5
On behalf of the Piedmont Society, we are delighted to report that the Duke Orthopaedic residency program is ranked fifth in the country! US news and World report teamed up with Doximity to rank residency programs in twenty specialties, including orthopaedics. A separate survey of medical students going into orthopaedics suggested that 50% of students will use the information from the ranking in selecting a residency program, showing the significance of having a high ranking. You can see the full report at Doximity’s Residency Navigator .
This high ranking is a testament to all of the Duke faculty, and of course to Bill Hardaker, for building such a strong residency program, with a fabulous reputation! Bills tireless work in residency training over the past decades is responsible for this high rating, and Brian Brigman and Bill will be working together on residency training towards improving our already stellar reputation.
Please join us in congratulating Bill, and all of our faculty members on this incredible accomplishment.

Duke Surgeon Brings Scoliosis Relief
Isaac Karikari, MD, PhD
DURHAM — Three years ago, Raleigh resident Stephanie Parrish learned her chronic back pain was the result of Scoliosis, a curvature of the spine that essentially means it’s crooked. Her condition went from pain that bothered her while running to a condition that soon prevented her from walking for any prolonged period of time.
“I went through a series of cortisone shots, an epidural, and it was like having a headache in your whole body,” Stephanie recalled.
Eventually, she was referred to Isaac Karikari, MD, PhD, a neurosurgeon at Duke Medicine who is one of a handful of brain surgeons in the country also trained to treat complex scoliosis. Typically, this is a procedure that is performed by an orthopedic surgeon. But, Dr. Karikari was motivated to learn this specialized skill set in addition to becoming a neurosurgeon.
“During my training here, I had a chance to observe and follow some patients that had similar surgeries, and what really got me interested and more passionate about it was when I saw the patients back in clinic. I could tell that this surgery actually works. And this makes a huge difference in the lives of patients,” said Karikari.
The procedure itself can take anywhere from 5 to 10 or more hours.
As a result, surgeons work more efficiently and it’s improving patients’ outcomes.
“I feel 1000% better, I can’t tell you when I felt this good,” she said.

Clinical Focus And Research
I do a lot of research focusing on how patients do after hip and knee replacement procedures. We are very lucky to be able to perform these operations that are usually so successful. Despite this high likelihood of success, we know there are ways to do these operations, and care for patients, even better. That is why our research focuses on so many different aspects of the care we deliver. We look at implant design, new surgical approaches, new implant and instrument technology, rapid patient recovery and accelerated discharge, different pain management techniques, and even cost effectiveness. The research we do allows to us be on the cutting edge of hip and knee replacement, but it also allows us to evaluate the care we deliver as we strive for even better results for patients. We also remain dedicated to the central mission of Duke Orthopaedics, which is to eventually find the cure for arthritis. There will be a day where the treatment we deliver will be a biological one and not reliant on metal, ceramic, and plastic.
