Surgical realignment of the foot or ankle is an open surgery performed under general anesthesia.
Your surgeon will make several small incisions in your ankle and insert small surgical instruments to cut the bones and align them in the joint. Your doctor may use metal plates or screws to fuse and stabilize the joint.
After the joint is properly aligned and stabilized, your surgeon will remove bone fragments and damaged cartilage. He or she will then repair the layers of skin and muscle around the injury.

Surgical repair of a displaced fracture is performed by manually shifting the broken bones bake into place, known as reduction of the fracture, and then placing metals screws and plates to hold the broken bones in correct position until the fracture has healed.
How Do Ankle Fractures Happen

What To Expect At Subsequent Post
Additional post-op appointment will usually take place at 3-4 weeks intervals. X-rays will be obtained to evaluate for healing at the fracture site at each visit until the fracture has healed. Once there is some healing noted at the fracture site, your activities will be advanced to allow more weight-bearing on your leg, and eventually transitioning out of the CAM boot. Again, you will be given precise instructions about weight-bearing and removal of the CAM boot, because this varies from individual to individual.
When wearing the CAM boot, consider obtaining a shoe that is of equivalent height for the opposite foot. This will decrease the likelihood of developing back pain caused by shoe height discrepancy. Once you have weaned out of the CAM boot, you may resume physical activity such as walking and riding a stationary bicycle. How Do You Talk To Someone Who Is Dying
I broke my ankle and had a plate and 11 screws August 2108.
I was getting my wound attended to by HITH nurses and was surprised when one of them asked it I had metal in my ankle. I said yes, and she said she could see it. That kind of freaked me out a bit! The bottom 2 stitches didn’t seal the wound properly.
Another nurse took a swab and it came back positive for MRSA.
I went to see the surgeon who wasn’t happy I’d had it swabbed.I felt ripped off as it wasn’t my fault the wound wasn’t sealed properly post surgery!
I had to go for a 2nd operation in November 2108, a wound debridement, where one of the screws was also removed.
The wound could finally start healing.
Once the wound healed, I still found I had constant pain in my ankle.
I went to see the surgeon again about July 2019 and was told that some people just react to the metal and I could get the hardware removed whenever I wanted.
I had the metal removed 6 days ago. The post op pain isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’m being good and staying off it and doing my exercises regularly. Hopefully it’s healing well and the ankle will feel better once healed.
Looking forward to not feeling the metal in it!

Orif Surgery Recovery Time
Generally, recovery takes 3 to 12 months.
Every surgery is different. Complete recovery depends on the type, severity, and location of your fracture. Recovery can take longer if you develop complications after surgery.
Once your bones begin to heal, your doctor may have you do physical or occupational therapy.
A physical or occupational therapist can show you specific rehabilitation exercises. These moves will help you regain strength and movement in the area.
For a smooth recovery, heres what you can do at home:
- Take pain medication. You might need to take over-the-counter or prescription pain medication, or both. Follow your doctors instructions.
- Make sure your incision stays clean. Keep it covered and wash your hands often. Ask your doctor how to properly change the bandage.
- Lift the limb. After ORIF, your doctor might tell you to elevate the limb and apply ice to decrease swelling.
- Dont apply pressure. Your limb may need to stay immobile for a while. If you were given a sling, wheelchair, or crutches, use them as directed.
- Continue physical therapy. If your physical therapist taught you home exercises and stretches, do them regularly.

Postoperative recovery: general facts
Following surgery, a bandage and a cam boot will be fitted to the leg.
Dr Watson will review your wound at 2 weeks in his rooms.
You cant drive for 6 weeks following surgery
You should take DVT prevention medication for 6 weeks following the injury. In most patients 100mg of Aspirin is sufficient. In patients with higher risk for DVT, a stronger blood thinner will be provided.
No walking on the foot is permitted until the wound is reviewed 2 weeks after surgery. At that time you will be allowed to walk in a walking boot.
It will take about 3 months before the ankle starts to feel comfortable. Ankle swelling will generally persist for about 9-12 months.
The specific Post-Operative Course will vary slightly according to fracture pattern and the bone quality, but the following general rule apply:
Day 1 Foot is wrapped in bulky bandage and cam boot, ice, elevate, take pain medication. Expect numbness in foot 12-24 hours.
- Some bloody drainage through bandage is expected.
2 weeks First follow-up in the rooms, dressing changed, sutures are removed. A removable camboot can be removed for excercises and showering. Please start movement of the ankle out of the boot. You can shower
Full walking in boot is permitted, as long as the wound is pristine.
9-12 weeks

When your surgery is scheduled, you will be given a pre-surgery packet including information on location of the surgery. Most of the time, this operation is performed at an outpatient surgery center. This includes Coumadin, Plavix, aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines , glucosamine, and herbs that may cause thinning of the blood.
