What Is Joint Replacement Surgery
Joint replacement surgery is a surgical procedure that is performed to replace an arthritic or damaged joint with a new, artificial joint, called a prosthesis. Joint replacements can be performed on every joint in the body, but most commonly performed in the knee, hip, shoulder and elbow.
Joints contain cartilage. After protecting joints and facilitating movement and over time, or if the joint has been injured, the cartilage wears away and the bones of the joint start rubbing together. As the bones rub together, bone spurs may form, and the joint becomes stiff and painful. Most people have joint replacement surgery when they can no longer control the pain with medication and other treatments and the pain is significantly interfering with their lives.
What Is Arthroscopic Surgery

Arthroscopic surgery is a surgical procedure commonly performed to diagnose and treat problems within the joint. By using high-tech cameras, the orthopedic surgeon inserts a small instrument, called an arthroscope, into the joint.
The arthroscope contains a fiber optic light source and small television camera that allow the surgeon to view the joint on a television monitor and diagnose the problem, determine the extent of injury and make any necessary repairs.

Should I Use Ice On My Injury Should I Use Heat On My Injury
The general rule of thumb is to use ice in the acute stage of an injury , or whenever swelling is showing. Ice helps to reduce inflammation and swelling by decreasing blood flow to the area that is injured. The general guideline is to apply ice indirectly for 20 minutes, remove the ice for at least 20 minutes and repeat as necessary.
Heat is used to increase blood flow, which helps promote pain relief after inflammation and swelling subside. Heat is also used to assist in warming muscles up prior to exercise, any physical activity or physical therapy.

Reaching A Milestone: Advanced Center For Orthopedics And Sports Medicine Celebrating 60th Year
Dr. Glenn Henning works with a patient at the Advanced Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. The center has been in practice for 60 years in Owensboro.
The Advanced Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine has reached its 60th year in Owensboro, a milestone that speaks to the practices dedication to the community, said Dr. Keith Moore, a board-certified general orthopedic surgeon at the facility.
The practice was founded by Dr. Joseph Stiles as a general orthopedic clinic.
As the practice began bringing on more providers, Moore said it started to really expand and become a staple in the community for orthopedic care.
The practice brought on Dr. William Bob Fuqua and Dr. Leslie Riherd, both of whom received orthopedic training in the military.
They were the two doctors that really built this practice strong, Moore said. They came out of the military, and I think Dr. Fuqua was one of the very early joint replacement surgeons in the whole state of Kentucky. Bob, when he came, really brought the advanced orthopedics to Owensboro with joint replacements and care like that.
Moore said the practice has grown to eight physicians, with it having 23,000 to 26,000 patient visits annually.
Moore said all of the centers physicians are dedicated to the community, whether they are from the area, have family ties or have decided to build a life and family in Owensboro.
The practice, however, will continue its focus on the community and patient care, Moore said.
